Meals on Wheels is constantly monitoring the evolving situation related to COVID-19 and our priority remains the health and safety of our clients, volunteers and staff. We are receiving daily updates from the Ministry of Health and expect our services to continue unless otherwise instructed.
We implement contactless delivery measures to ensure the safety of all involved. So, volunteers will put a client’s food in a plastic bag to hang on the doorknob or place on a porch surface and knock/call the client as usual. Backing 2 meters from the door, the volunteer waits for the client to retrieve the food. These changes allow us to practice social distancing as recommended by health officials while continuing to ensure that our clients receive check-ins from volunteers.

The main target groups for receiving Meals on Wheels are the elderly, people with disabilities, people with a chronic or terminal illness and people receiving treatment.
In addition to delivering hot meals, Meals on Wheels also has frozen meals. The frozen meal program is an alternative or in addition to traditional hot meal delivery. The frozen meal program is an ideal program for those who want to have more flexibility in choosing their food and do not want to commit to staying at home every day.
The frozen meals are prepared by a company called Apetito. Apetito offers an enticing selection of main dishes, soups and desserts, including meals suitable for vegetarians, diabetics and reduced sodium diets. In addition, there is a special diet menu that offers pure, mink, kidney, gluten-free and lactose-free food. With apetito frozen meals you can choose your own menu and prepare these entrees, soups and desserts as you see fit. Frozen meals are nutritionally balanced and specially designed for the elderly. They usually have more protein and vitamins with controlled levels of sodium and less fat than other commonly available frozen meals.
The food is presented in a cardboard container that can be placed in the microwave or oven. Each dish is labeled with cooking instructions as well as ingredients.
