The tallest dog recorded in the history of Guinness World Records is Zeus, a gigantic Great Dane of legendary proportions who stood seven feet tall.

In an interview with The Kalamazoo Gazette shortly after Zeus’ passing, Kevin and his wife, Denise, said they would stop letting Zeus sit on their laps, especially while grilling on their deck.
A dog’s height is measured from the base of the feet to the withers – which is the highest point above the dog’s shoulder blades. At the age of three, Zeus already measured 44 inches tall (that’s 3 feet 8 inches, over 1.1 meters!).
Standing on his hind legs, Zeus was even taller—stretching to 7 feet 4 inches, earning him the title of “World’s Largest Dog.”
Zeus was preceded by another Great Dane, Giant George, who was actually a Great Blue Dane. Giant George was an inch shorter than Zeus, measuring in at 43 inches. For visual reference, just think of two average-sized golden retrievers stacked on top of each other.

Giant George passed away at the ripe old age of seven (which is average for dogs his size).
After George, Freddy the Great Dane was named the next biggest dog in 2016. Freddy’s owner, Claire Stoneman of Essex, UK, said Freddy was originally a litter dog, but still stood tall at 7ft 5.5in. His hind legs. Later, Freddie also died at the age of eight and a half.
The current Great Dane holding the record for the world’s largest dog is Atlas, a German Harlequin Great Dane who lives with his owners in Navarre, Florida. At six years old, Atlas weighs 225 pounds. He stands 4 feet, 4 inches from his paws to his shoulders, only a few inches shorter than Zeus.
The breed is said to have originated in Germany in the 1800s and was bred specifically for boar hunting. However, their history seems to go much further back to Egyptian times, with drawings similar to this beautiful breed found on Egyptian monuments dating back to 3,000 BC.

Zeus, who lives in Otsego, Mich., was named the world’s tallest dog by Guinness World Records in 2012. The people at Guinness described him as:
