Whether you’re excited to teach your new puppy a few new tricks, want to try a dog sport that isn’t available in your area, or need help with your dog’s serious behavior, there are online dog training resources that can help. .

Essential Dog Training Hand Signals And How To Use Them

Note: Some of the paid videos we recommend below have affiliate links, which means K9 of Mine may receive a commission if you decide to purchase the paid course (don’t worry, we’re mostly talking about free stuff). We didn’t let this affect our recommendations, but we think you should know!

From puppy training to teaching your dog to stay, there are tons of great free dog training videos out there. Let’s take a look at some of the best free dog training videos on the web!

Trainer Qualifications: Dr. Ian Dunbar is a veterinarian, doctor, and behaviorist who founded the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. He is something of the father of modern dog training and frankly there are few trainers more qualified than him.

All of Dr. Dunbar’s videos are hosted on his own website – Dunbar Academy – so we couldn’t embed any of his videos here, but below is a TED Talk he did on dog behavior. Yes – this man knows his stuff!

We Investigated How Police Use Dogs As Weapons. Here’s How You Can Do It Too.

What we love: Dr. Dunbar is honest and charming without being too flashy. You can easily pair online videos with his podcast (iWoof) and his free E-Books.

If you want to go deeper than his free videos, Dr. Dunbar offers the Best Dog Academy option as a $20/month subscription package that gives you more access to Dr. Dunbar’s nearly endless knowledge.

Constructive Criticism: Some people find Dr. Dunbar’s voice a bit dry and complain that they might fall asleep with his English accent. Some of his methods are not the most progressive, but are still incredibly well supported by research.

Best: Anything before you force your puppy to deal with behavior problems. Dr. Dunbar is a true puppy genius, but his behavior modification skills are not to be ignored either!

Healthy Dog Training Treats

Avoid: Dr. Dunbar is good for almost everything. If Dr. Dunbar sells it, I’ll buy it.

Trainer Qualifications: Emily Larlem doesn’t seem to have any professional credentials, but like Tab Shams (below), she seems well-educated and has great videos. It focuses on building a trusting relationship with your dog through kind, science-backed training methods.

What we love: Emily (Kikopap) keeps her videos concise and showcases a wide variety of dogs. He does an excellent job of training multiple dogs, which is hard to find good examples of elsewhere. His stunt training is really top notch.

Constructive criticism: Emily sometimes pauses in her speech in a way that can be a bit distracting.

Who Is Dog Trainer Graeme Hall?

Avoid: Concern for serious behavior, as most of the content is on the lighter side. Not the best for those who really like flashy, high-energy videos.

Trainer Qualifications: Joan Basinger is a graduate of the Jean Donaldson Dog Trainer Academy, a prestigious school for professional trainers. He is also a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers and is an experienced marine mammal trainer. In other words, this woman knows her stuff!

What we love: Joanne keeps her videos short and to the point. It does a great job of showing several different options for each skill in a very short amount of time. Joanna is clearly experienced and well educated.

Constructive Criticism: Unfortunately, JoAnne’s Howcast videos seem to be quite limited. There are only 24 videos on the site, and it looks like Howcast is producing more. That means you might not find what you’re looking for from JoAnne.

The 7 Best Puppy Pads Of 2023

Trainer Qualifications: Full Disclosure – This is my channel! I am an Associate Certified Canine Behavioral Consultant (learn about the rigors of this certification here).

I learned how to train dogs as a volunteer at a rescue that specializes in rescuing and re-training “childless dogs”. Since then, I have trained thousands of shelter dogs and helped hundreds of families with their difficult dogs.

What we love: I record most of my videos first on Facebook Live during my free “Exercise Tuesday” classes. This means you can join me at 7pm EST on Facebook and interact with me while I film a tutorial on the topic. This is quite unique from other free video trainers!

Constructive Criticism: My video quality isn’t as high as others, so it can be frustrating to watch some of my videos on a larger screen. I promise, I’m working on upgrading my equipment (and my editing skills). My tutorials are much longer than many others, which is not good for quick information.

How To Become A Certified Dog Trainer

Best for: For those who like to ask questions while learning, as the Facebook Live aspect offers an extra level of interaction. It is also a good choice for dogs with behavioral problems such as aggression and anxiety.

Trainer Qualifications: Although Zach George is similar in his methodology to many professional dog training organizations, this celebrity trainer does not appear to have any education or certification that sets him apart in terms of knowledge.

What we love: Zach George’s videos are truly made for YouTube — his videos are broken down into easy-to-understand tidbits of information. He is funny and charismatic and his training is based on positive reinforcement. We love that it’s so popular – it’s really helping more people learn about positive dog training.

Best Dog Training Video Ever

Constructive Criticism: Some of Zach’s behavior modification videos highlight his lack of training in aggression – he doesn’t use proper safety precautions and I don’t recommend following his advice when working with aggressive dogs.

Dogs Of Oz: Train Your Dog By Rewarding Good Behaviour

It can also be “too YouTube-y” for my taste, with an overly caffeinated feel and dramatic shots. Sometimes it’s more like marketing and entertainment than real education. His latest videos are also full of promotions for his dog food line.

Want to learn more about Zach George? Kayla provided a complete explanation and review of Zach George’s dog training methodology and practice. Check it out!

Trainer Qualifications: Like Zach George, Tab Shams does not have any professional affiliations, specific education or dog training certifications. Nevertheless, his skills are solid and his teaching methods are in line with the modern science of learning theory.

What we love: Positivity Training is more intelligent and honest than Zach George, which I think makes it easier to watch – it’s less dangerous! His coaching skills are solid and he does a great job of breaking down skills.

What Age Should You Start Training A Puppy To Hunt?

Training Positive is the only YouTube trainer I’ve personally used to teach my dog a trick, and the others on this list I’ve only used to demonstrate to clients.

Constructive criticism: I can’t find much about Shamsi’s training credentials online, which may not matter if you’re focused on tricks and obedience. However, I don’t like seeing uncomfortable trainers teaching behavior modification. Viewer-wise, he might also be a little less interesting to watch than Zach George for those who like YouTube-style videos.

That’s right, K9 of Mine has its own YouTube channel! We cover a lot of dog-related content, from dog food reviews and DIY dog tools to training needs, especially for reactive dogs.

Best Dog Training Video Ever

Trainer Qualifications: This channel is run by Mine founder Meg Mars’ K9, and while she doesn’t have any training credentials, she does have several years of experience volunteering with shelter animals and working with her own reactive dog.

Cmpd Animal Care & Control Goodpup Offer Low Cost Dog Training

What we love: Maggie doesn’t just offer training tips, she also sheds a lot of light on how difficult it can be to have a dog with behavioral issues. Many viewers really appreciate his approach and recognition of how difficult it is to work with a reactive dog!

Constructive Criticism: Maggie is not a certified dog behavior consultant, so her training tips are based on what she has learned from working with other professionals and from her own research and personal experience with her own reactive dog. But, Maggie will be the first person to tell you that when dealing with an aggressive dog, you should work with a certified dog behavior consultant.

You may notice a glaring absence from this list of free dog training videos: Doggy Dan. Doggy Dan also offers paid courses, but its free videos are mostly where people start.

While researching this article, I signed up for Doggy Dan’s free course. It’s started well enough – it’s not about scaring your dog into getting it to behave. But after a few moments, he says that he also does not use healers.
