MANILA, Philippines — Adamson University has parted ways with head coach Franz Pumaren, the school announced Tuesday.
In a statement, Adamson said Pumaren will no longer return as coach of the Soaring Falcons to focus on his duties as councilor in the third district of Quezon City.
“As Adamson University understands the desire of Coach Franz to give full-time service to his constituents in his district in Quezon City, we announce with a heavy heart that Coach Franz will cease mentoring the Adamson Falcons effective this current year,” the statement read.
“The whole Adamson community would like to thank Coach Franz Pumaren for his unselfish sharing of his time and talent with the Adamson Men’s Varsity Team, masterfully lifting once again the standing of the Falcons in the prestigious UAAP League.”
Pumaren, who steered La Salle to five UAAP championships, returned to coaching in the collegiate ranks with Adamson in 2016.
He guided the Falcons to three Final Four appearances.
“His unique brand of coaching has carried the Falcons through several respectable finishes in the last five UAAP seasons which were considered by the Adamson community as the most electrifying Falcon seasons by far,” the school wrote.
“To Coach Franz, we will forever be grateful. We could not have pulled off the Falcon’s comeback in the UAAP podium without you.”
Mike Fermin has been tapped as the Falcons’ interim head coach.

Tokyo Olympics organizers could choose new president this week-report

Aljun Melecio

TOKYO – Tokyo Olympic organizers could choose their new president as early as this week, a report said on Monday, after former chief Yoshiro Mori resigned over sexist remarks that provoked a global outcry.
Local organizers need to “urgently” pick a new president with just five months left to prepare for the Games amid the COVID-19 pandemic and are setting up a selection committee made up of an equal number of men and women, the group’s chief executive Toshiro Muto said last week.
The selection committee will hold its first meeting at the start of this week, Nippon TV reported, citing unidentified sources. Committee members will submit names of candidates in the days after and could select the new president as soon as this week, the report said.
However, the process could carry over into next week if there is a large number of candidates, Nippon TV said.
Among those being considered to succeed Mori are Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto, a pioneering female lawmaker and seven-time Olympian who is one of only two women in Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s cabinet, media have said.
Hashimoto, born just days before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, said on Friday she had not been asked to replace Mori.
Others who have been floated to succeed Mori include Mikako Kotani, a two-time Olympian in synchronized swimming, now known as artistic swimming, who serves on the Japanese Olympic Committee, and Upper House lawmaker Tamayo Marukawa, a previous Olympics Minister.
Media said another possible candidate was Daichi Suzuki, a former Olympic gold medalist backstroke swimmer who has served as commissioner of the Japan Sport Agency, an organisation aiming to promote sport nationwide.
Another person being considered for the role was Koji Murofushi, a former Olympic gold medalist hammer thrower who has served as the agency’s commissioner since October after succeeding Suzuki.
Mori’s handpicked successor, former Japan Football Association president Saburo Kawabuchi, 84, on Friday declined the job after publicly accepting it earlier, news reports said.
The Summer Olympics, which were postponed last year due to the pandemic, are scheduled to open July 23.

Serena does not need Grand Slam record for validation – coach

pacquiao mcgregor

FILE PHOTO: Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 14, 2021 Serena Williams of the U.S. in action during her fourth round match against Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka REUTERS/Loren Elliott
MELBOURNE – Serena Williams wants to win more Grand Slams but hardly needs the all-time record for validation, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou said on Monday.
Williams is bidding for a 24th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, which would match Margaret Court’s record.
The American great has fallen short in four Grand Slam finals since winning the 2017 Australian Open but has another chance after reaching the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.
“Does she need that validation? I don’t think she needs that validation,” Mouratoglou told reporters.
“But clearly she came back to tennis to win some other Grand Slams, so that’s for sure the goal.
“Now, she’s not as obsessed with the 24 than most of the people in the tennis world, but definitely she wants to win Grand Slams. That’s the only reason why she came back to tennis.”
Mouratoglou said it did not really make sense to compare Williams’s record with Court, given 13 of the Australian’s Grand Slam titles came before the professional era, which started in 1968.
“We all know it’s two different sports,” he said.
“It’s an amateur sport and a professional sport.
“But it’s probably fun to talk about beating records, which is something that I understand.”
Mouratoglou said Williams at 39 was moving better than she had in three years on the court, and the team had placed a big emphasis on bringing back the “footwork” she had in the past.
“If you can’t move well, there is no Plan B. The only plan is attack. I think it cost her a few important matches,” said the Frenchman.
“We’ve been struggling those last years because she had a lot of injuries, so she was not able to practice the way we wanted,” he said.
“It’s a bit of a vicious circle because when you can’t practice well, you don’t get fit.
“Now we’re more in a virtuous circle than a vicious one.”
Tenth seed Williams plays second seed Simona Halep for a place in the semifinals. Halep beat her for the 2019 Wimbledon title the last time they met.
The Wimbledon triumph was only Halep’s second victory in 11 matches played against Williams but Mouratoglou saw it as something of a watershed for the Romanian.
“I think Simona played the perfect match in Wimbledon. It’s going to be a different process for her because she knows she can play like that against Serena, which she never did before,” said Mouratoglou.
“She will come probably with more confidence, and we’re prepared for that.”

Coach doesn’t have say if Sotto plays right away

Tokyo Olympics

Kai Sotto is on his way back to the United States to backstop Ignite in the NBA G League’s bubble tournament in Orlando, Florida, but whether he actually gets to suit up, however, remains up in the air.
“That’ll be something that will be determined by the people that are above my paygrade,” Ignite head coach Brian Shaw said during media availability on the heels of the team’s latest victory on Sunday (Manila time).Sotto returned to the Philippines earlier this month, hoping to reinforce a Philippine team in the Fiba (International Basketball Federation) Asia Cup qualifiers for three games against South Korea and Indonesia. It was a move that raised eyebrows back in the United States as Ignite was also in deep preparation for the G League’s new season.
Even Shaw himself wasn’t a fan of the move. He previously said that Sotto’s best chance of growth was playing for Ignite. Nevertheless, Shaw still threw his support behind the young Filipino.
East West Private, the firm that handles Sotto’s career, later clarified that the G League actually gave the 7-foot-3 Sotto clearance to play for Gilas, granted he flies back to the States as soon as the Nationals’ last match wrapped up.
Those matches never happened.
Sotto will have to hurdle multiple quarantine measures before he could even enter the G League’s bio-secure setup at Walt Disney World complex, which will leave him with lesser games to play in.
Ignite is currently undefeated in three games.
“Right now, I’m just concerned about the guys that are here and coaching them and we’ll see what happens when we get to that point,” Shaw said. INQ

Anthony Joshua says he wants to join WWE

pacquiao mcgregor

MANILA, Philippines — Three-belt heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua may climb another ring in the future, and that would be the one that tycoon Vince McMahon owns.
In an interview with Alternative Sport, Joshua said he wants to take part in the WWE as it was something that the legendary Muhammad Ali had done in the past.
“I’m gonna do WWE because that’s what Muhammad Ali done,” said Joshua, who owns the WBA, IBF, and WBO world titles.
If Joshua does join the WWE in the future,  he enters the list of absolute icons, who–in some capacity–performed for McMahon’s organization.
Ali, who took inspiration from wrestling pioneer Gorgeous George for his flamboyant image, had a couple of run-ins in the WWE first was in 1976 when he had a confrontation with Gorilla Monsoon and then was the special guest referee in the main event of Wrestlemania I in 1985 in a tag team match that featured Hulk Hogan and Mr. T against “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff.
Mike Tyson, though, was the boxer with the most instrumental role in WWE history when he was the one that made the three-count for “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s WWE Championship victory against Shawn Michaels in the main event of Wrestlemania in what is considered as the beginning of the company’s most prosperous period the Attitude Era.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the first boxer to have an official match in WWE when he faced the Big Show in Wrestlemania 14.
WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, Joshua’s rival, was the most recent boxer to step inside the WWE when he had a match against Braun Strowman in 2019 in the Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia.

World No. 4 Kenin shocked by unranked teenager

Sander Totuli และ Roman Mathieu ชนะการแข่งขัน WCOAP

Beaten Australian Open titleholder Sofia Kenin’s slump deepened as she was stunned by unranked teenager Olivia Gadecki at the Phillip Island Trophy on Sunday.
Kenin, whose maiden Grand Slam title defense ended in the second round this week, suffered an almost unthinkable defeat by the 18-year-old Australian, who won 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.
Kenin, the world number four, had been in tears after her straight-sets Australian Open loss to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi on Thursday.
But the American top seed also failed to get further than the second round in the Phillip Island Trophy, which is being held alongside the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Gadecki becomes the first unranked player to beat top-10 opposition in 24 years, following a 15-year-old Mirjana Lucic-Baroni’s win over Amanda Coetzer in the 1997 Bol semifinals.
The Gold Coast resident, who had never before played anyone inside the top 200, has just $2,189 in career prize money — compared to the $2.8 million Kenin picked up for winning the Australian Open last year.

Third seed Thiem slumps out of Australian Open

pacquiao mcgregor

Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 14, 2021 Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and Austria’s Dominic Thiem after their fourth round match REUTERS/Jaimi Joy
MELBOURNE – Third seed Dominic Thiem slumped out of the Australian Open in lackluster fashion on Sunday, comprehensively beaten 6-4 6-4 6-0 in the fourth round by Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
The U.S. Open champion, who came back from two sets down to beat Nick Kyrgios in an exhausting third round battle on Friday night, looked out of sorts from the beginning of the contest and made an uncharacteristic 41 unforced errors.
While Thiem’s five-set match against Kyrgios had been played in a bear pit at John Cain Arena, Sunday’s match was witnessed by only a handful of officials and coaches on Rod Laver Arena as Melbourne’s coronavirus lockdown kept the fans away.
The first two sets followed the same pattern with Thiem taking an early 3-1 lead only for 18th seed Dimitrov to charge back at him and clinch the set.
The Austrian, losing finalist here last year, was unable to rouse himself in the third set and his Australian Open ended when he flapped a forehand long after little more than two hours on court.
“Throughout every season you have one of those matches where you keep the ball rolling,” Dimitrov said after going 4-2 up in his career record against Thiem.
“He might have had a problem, I don’t know, but I also give myself some credit for staying in there.
“He’s an extraordinary player so I’m happy with the win.”
After securing his maiden Grand Slam crown at Flushing Meadows last year, Thiem had been widely tipped to challenge Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer for more major titles this year.
Dimitrov knows all about failing to fulfil big expectations after being dubbed “Baby Fed” early in his career for the similarity of his playing style to that of Roger Federer.
The 29-year-old, who took Nadal to five sets in the 2017 semi-finals at Melbourne Park, will face Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev in his fourth Australian Open quarter-final.
“If you’re there, it’s for a reason, whether it’s a fairytale or not, you’ve got to be ready,” Dimitrov said of his preparations to face the world number 114.
“It’s going to be a battle.”
